Chemicals

Home to global leaders like Aevecia, Lundbeck, Dupont and BOC Corporation, the sector accounts for £10bn in sales and employs 40,000 people.

Food & Drink

Generating £3.5bn, the food and drink sector is made up of 1500 companies including United Biscuits, PepsiCo, Nestle, and Kerry Foods.

Healthcare

The sector generates more than £4bn, is one of the North Easts biggest employers and is home to Avecia, GlaxoSmithKilne, Merck and Sanofi.

Energy

The North East's Energy sector boasts one of the UK's leading hubs researching new and renewable sources of energy.

Defence & Marine

4000 people are directly employed in the North East's Defence sector and it remains an important contributor to the regional economy.

Automotive

The sector accounts for £1 billion of the North East's GVA, more than 26,000 jobs and includes Nissan Motors UK (NMUK) and its supply chain.

Knowledge Intensive Business Services

Including the transport, financial services and leisure industries, the sector represents around 40% of all regional value-added.

Commerical Creative Industries

The wider commercial, digital and creative sector sector employs up to 60,000 people in the North East in over 5,000 businesses.
